Žižkov Rebels and Concrete Giants12345678910
Žižkov tells a different Prague story—less polished, more argumentative, and far more interested in who built the city than who ruled it. Beginning beneath Vítkov Hill, this walk explores how a medieval commander became a reusable national hero and how later governments reshaped his battlefield into monumental political theater. Descending into the neighborhood, military grandeur gives way to workers’ streets, civic institutions, literary dissent, and an unapologetically rough pub. Jaroslav Seifert’s birthplace and Škroupovo náměstí reveal rebellion through poetry and public speech rather than weapons, connecting Žižkov’s working-class roots with resistance to communist authority. The television tower then dominates the journey as both engineering achievement and contested intrusion. Its crawling babies provide post-communist mischief, while the neighboring Jewish cemetery demands a more sober examination of modernization, memory, and state power. From Parukářka, the district’s towers, railways, and rooftops become one layered historical landscape. This tour is ideal for travelers who prefer social history, unconventional architecture, local culture, and political complexity to supernatural legends or postcard sightseeing. It finishes at the freight station, where battles over labor, preservation, housing, and redevelopment prove that Žižkov’s rebellious identity is still being negotiated.

Armádní muzeum Žižkov

A modern military museum revealing how Czech rebels became official national heroes.

Begin with the real people behind centuries of military mythmaking. Renovated galleries trace Hussite warfare, Czechoslovak legionaries, resistance to Nazism, communist rule, and democratic renewal. Uniforms, propaganda, armored vehicles, and personal testimony show how soldiers and ordinary conscripts were repeatedly enlisted in competing versions of national history.
