Through Vinohrady’s Gilded Streets123456789101112
Vinohrady feels elegant without becoming a museum. Its broad avenues, geometric squares and richly decorated apartment houses still support the routines they were designed for: commuting, shopping, meeting friends, attending performances and escaping into green parks. This walk traces the district’s transformation from the late Habsburg era into the confident First Republic. You will encounter neo-Gothic spires, theatrical Art Nouveau façades, Kotěra’s restrained early modernism and the striking interwar churches of Pavel Janák and Jože Plečnik. Markets, vineyards and park paths reveal the infrastructure and leisure culture behind the architecture. The route is ideal for architecture lovers, urban-history enthusiasts and anyone curious about daily life beyond Prague’s historic center. Look upward for sculpted rulers, linger in neighborhood squares and notice how public institutions were woven directly into residential streets. By the end, Vinohrady emerges as more than a collection of handsome buildings. It is a complete urban world shaped by civic ambition, cultural confidence and the enduring pleasures of walking, conversation and city life.

Havlíčkovy Sady

A romantic vineyard estate transformed into Vinohrady’s most atmospheric public park.

Havlíčkovy sady, better known as Grébovka, interrupts Vinohrady’s orderly streets with vineyards, terraces, woodland and a theatrical grotto. Created for industrialist Moritz Gröbe, this private estate later became a public park. Its layered landscape reveals how elite leisure was gradually absorbed into the everyday life of the modern district.
