Walking Vedado’s Modernist Afterlives1234567891011
Vedado is where Havana’s twentieth century becomes architecture. Within a compact group of streets, aristocratic villas, Art Deco apartments, casino hotels and daring concrete towers reveal the wealth, ambition and social contrasts of Republican Cuba. Then came 1959. The route follows what happened next: a Hilton became a revolutionary headquarters, a casino hotel entered state tourism, a medical complex joined public-health administration and private collections moved into public museums. These were not identical transformations, and the surviving buildings make those differences visible. Along the way, you will encounter the soaring FOCSA tower, Coppelia’s exuberant concrete pavilion, the gardens of the Hotel Nacional and lavish residences redirected toward culture and diplomacy. Some interiors welcome visitors, while working homes and offices are best appreciated respectfully from the sidewalk. This walk is ideal for architecture lovers, design enthusiasts and curious travelers who want revolutionary history without leaving Vedado for distant monuments. It is worth the time because the neighborhood remains lived-in and evolving: modernism here is not frozen, but adapted, repaired and continually reinterpreted.

Vedado’s grand coastal hotel layers glamorous tourism, political upheaval and Cold War history into one remarkable property. Nationalized after 1959, it retained its prestige while serving a new state-run system. Wander through the arcades and gardens, then notice how defensive trenches coexist with sweeping views of the Malecón.
