Behind Havana’s Vanished Walls12345678910
This walk looks beyond Havana’s postcard façades to reveal the machinery of a fortified colonial city. Wall fragments, broad promenades, harbor forts, and narrow streets show how defense controlled movement and continued shaping the city after the ramparts disappeared. Along the way, you will follow water into a former swamp square, step inside a climate-smart courtyard house, and examine how plazas organized government, trade, worship, and everyday encounters. Changes in paving, scale, shade, and street width become clues to centuries of practical citycraft. The route is ideal for architecture lovers, urban-history enthusiasts, and curious walkers who enjoy discovering why a city looks the way it does. Most stops remain meaningful from public spaces, so unexpected museum closures will not unravel the experience. Bring water, an offline map, and a little imagination. By the final square, Habana Vieja will feel less like a collection of landmarks and more like a living system shaped by walls, water, commerce, climate, and reinvention.

Castillo de La Punta

A compact harbor fortress reveals how Havana turned water into a defensive gate.

Low, angular, and built for artillery, La Punta guarded the western side of Havana’s narrow harbor entrance. Look across the channel toward El Morro to understand the planned crossfire. Wind, salt spray, and waves against the masonry make this the tour’s most vivid meeting of fortification and water.
