Hampton Park Through Hidden Time12345678910
Hampton Park looks like a peaceful retreat of lawns, flowers, water, and live oaks. Beneath that beauty, however, lies one of Charleston’s most layered landscapes: a celebrated racecourse, a Civil War prison camp and cemetery, an early Decoration Day site, and the setting for an ambitious world’s-fair-style exposition. The walk follows the park’s oval geometry before crossing its lawns, gardens, and commemorative spaces. You will encounter stories of enslaved equestrian expertise, suffering Union prisoners, Black Charlestonians honoring the dead in 1865, and fair organizers promoting progress within the deeply unequal world of Jim Crow. Along the way, the Denmark Vesey Monument and names such as Wade Hampton and Johnson Hagood reveal how public memory changes—and how old political choices remain visible in familiar places. The route then reaches the public edges of The Citadel, where temporary fairgrounds became a permanent military campus and mass spectacle took new forms. This tour suits history lovers, landscape readers, and anyone curious about stories hidden in ordinary public spaces. Allow two to three hours, carry water, and remember that the strongest evidence often comes from the landscape’s scale, historical maps, and careful interpretation rather than surviving structures.

Cleveland Street Entrance

This quiet boundary exposes how the enormous exposition spilled beyond today’s park.

This modest entrance helps reset your sense of scale. Hampton Park preserves only part of a much larger landscape once occupied by the racetrack and the 1901–02 exposition. Modern streets, athletic facilities, and Citadel property now divide the former grounds, making this boundary an excellent place to imagine what has disappeared.
