Scheveningen: Nets to Surfboards123456789101112
Scheveningen is often treated as The Hague’s beach, but its shore tells a much bigger story. This walk reveals how a vulnerable fishing settlement became a working harbor, fashionable resort, engineered coastline, and one of the Netherlands’ liveliest surf destinations. You will pass cottage-scale lanes, the Oude Kerk, maritime memorials, a working fish auction, and the red lighthouse before meeting the modern surf community at Hart Beach. Farther north, the curving boulevard conceals serious flood protection beneath an inviting promenade, while the Kurhaus and De Pier capture the theatrical world of seaside tourism. This tour is ideal for curious walkers who enjoy local history, maritime culture, architecture, and big coastal views. It balances reflective memorials and authentic harbor activity with coffee, beach energy, and playful resort landmarks. By the time you reach Zwarte Pad, the changing meaning of the North Sea becomes clear. Once approached mainly as a source of work and danger, it now also supports recreation, identity, nature, and year-round city life.
