Building Toa Payoh’s Heartlands123456789101112
Toa Payoh was more than a solution to a housing shortage. It became Singapore’s first comprehensively planned HDB satellite town, where homes were woven together with markets, places of worship, green spaces, transport and community services. This walk moves from an early residential block to neighborhood institutions, the celebrated “VIP Block,” a former athletes’ village and the colorful Dragon Playground. Along the way, ordinary spaces reveal ambitious ideas about walkability, social contact, childhood and belonging. You will also see how communities adapted to resettlement. A mosque funded by workers, five temples sharing one complex, a Catholic parish and an older Buddhist monastery show that planners relocated more than people—they had to make room for memory, ritual and mutual support. Architecture enthusiasts, history lovers and curious urban explorers will find plenty to enjoy. The tour is worth taking because Toa Payoh’s greatest achievement is still visible in daily life: a planned experiment that became a genuine home.
