Little Africa’s Living Memory12345678910
This walk reveals a Rio often hidden beneath port renovations and postcard images. Little Africa is not a neatly bounded district but a living cultural landscape shaped by enslaved Africans, Bahian migrants, dockworkers, religious leaders, abolitionists and musicians. You will move from Black brotherhoods and waterfront resistance to Largo da Prainha and Pedra do Sal, where labor, faith and music overlapped. At Valongo, buried wharf layers expose the machinery of the slave trade and later attempts to conceal it. Casa da Tia Ciata then shows how Black women created the spaces, protection and community that allowed samba to grow. MUHCAB and the Instituto Pretos Novos deepen the journey through art, memory, archaeology and testimony. Some moments are joyful and rhythmic; others demand silence and care. Together, they present Afro-Brazilian history through agency and creativity without softening the violence of enslavement and exclusion. This tour suits curious travelers, music lovers and anyone interested in history beyond official monuments. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and approach sacred and burial sites respectfully. The reward is a richer understanding of how Black Rio transformed survival into institutions, resistance and culture with global influence.

João Cândido Monument

A Black sailor’s monument recalls the revolt that challenged naval flogging.

Meet João Cândido Felisberto, the Black sailor who led the 1910 Revolt of the Lash. Crews seized warships to demand an end to brutal corporal punishment, only to face betrayal after amnesty was promised. The monument restores Black sailors and waterfront resistance to a national story that long minimized both.
