Little Africa: Stones of Freedom12345678910
This walk explores Little Africa as a landscape of forced arrival, labor, burial, mutual aid, and Black community-making. Rather than turning the neighborhood into a samba itinerary, it foregrounds the people and institutions that shaped Rio’s port under enslavement and after abolition. You will move from a historic Black brotherhood church and vanished shoreline to Pedra do Sal’s labor route, the warehouses associated with André Rebouças, and the excavated stones of Cais do Valongo. Gardens and ordinary squares reveal how redevelopment can beautify a district while obscuring those who lived, worked, and died there. The emotional center is the Instituto dos Pretos Novos, where archaeology beneath a family home recovered the memory of Africans denied dignity in death. MUHCAB then expands the narrative toward agency, cultural formation, political struggle, and the lives Black communities built beyond captivity. This tour suits thoughtful travelers interested in archaeology, urban history, social justice, and Afro-Brazilian heritage. It rewards patience, respectful observation, and a willingness to see freedom not as a single royal decree, but as an unfinished process created through care, resistance, work, and belonging.

Igreja do Rosário

A Black brotherhood church reveals collective care, faith, and institution-building under enslavement.

Begin with a powerful reminder that Africans and Afro-Brazilians built institutions even under brutal restrictions. The Black brotherhood associated with this church supported worship, burials, mutual aid, and sometimes manumission. Its reconstructed interior also tells a story of survival after a devastating fire erased much of the historic fabric.
