Rebellion Written on the Butte1234567891011
This walk treats the Butte-aux-Cailles as more than a picturesque hill. Beneath its intimate lanes lies a history of industrial labor, difficult terrain, municipal struggle and armed defense during the Paris Commune. You will climb from the former Bièvre valley toward streets covered with changing stencils, paste-ups and political images. Along the way, an artesian fountain, a living Commune association and an officially named square reveal different ways a neighborhood preserves collective memory. The route also asks what happened after revolution. Early workers’ housing and public infrastructure show how demands for dignity, sanitation and affordable homes were translated into uneven reforms across the 13th arrondissement. This tour suits street-art enthusiasts, social-history readers and curious walkers who prefer political context to decorative sightseeing. Expect slopes, narrow passages and impermanent art—and discover why even a painted-over wall can tell a compelling story.

Rue Émile-Deslandres

Small stencils and paste-ups turn this quiet street into political territory.

Here, street art works through accumulation rather than spectacle. Inspect shutters, drainpipes and doorway edges for stencils, paste-ups and miniature interventions addressing feminism, authority or environmental concerns. The corridor belongs to the wider Bièvre art territory, where unofficial images help trace a river now buried beneath the city.
