Rails That Reinvented Nice1234567891011
This walk reveals a side of Nice that lies beyond beaches and promenades. The railway’s arrival shifted the city northward, created a grand new entrance and filled former outskirts with churches, hotels, apartments and busy commercial streets. Beginning on the former Avenue de la Gare, you will follow the story from Nice-Ville’s national main line into the practical streets of the railway quarter. Active metre-gauge trains at Gare de Nice CP then lead toward Gare du Sud, where a rescued terminal façade became the centerpiece of Libération’s reinvention. The route continues beside Line 1, allowing you to compare nineteenth-century railway planning with modern tram-led regeneration. Passing trams, narrow residential avenues and the former Valrose estate show how transport influenced everything from working-class housing to extraordinary private wealth. Allow roughly two and a half to three hours, including observation stops. The walk is ideal for architecture lovers, railway enthusiasts and curious urban explorers who want to understand how infrastructure quietly shapes a city long after the first trains depart.

Avenue Jean-Médecin

Nice’s former station avenue, reborn as a lively modern tram spine.

Originally called Avenue de la Gare, this boulevard connected the 1864 railway station with central Nice. Hotels, banks and shops followed the rails northward. Today, Line 1 trams glide along the same urban axis, showing how public transport has reshaped the street twice—first for trains, then for pedestrians and electric transit.
