Under the Tent Roof123456789
Munich’s 1972 Olympic Park was designed to communicate a radically different vision of Germany: open, informal, democratic, and optimistic. Instead of monumental avenues and fortress-like arenas, its creators shaped rolling hills, pedestrian paths, transparent structures, and a vast tent roof that seemed to float above the landscape. The walk begins with the transit system and experimental housing built for the Games, including elevated pedestrian decks and student bungalows covered in resident-made art. It then pauses at Connollystraße 31 and the Olympic Attack Memorial, where the victims of the 1972 attack are remembered through the places and personal stories connected with them. From there, the route opens into the park itself. You will climb Olympiaberg, follow informal paths through Günther Grzimek’s democratic “landscape for use,” sit beside the lakeside Theatron, inspect the tensile roof at close range, and finish at the sunken Olympiastadion. This tour is ideal for architecture enthusiasts, Olympic-history followers, landscape lovers, and curious walkers who appreciate places with complicated legacies. It is worth taking slowly: the park’s real achievement lies in how engineering, memory, recreation, and ordinary city life continue to overlap beneath the roof.

Olydorf Bungalows

Colorful student homes reveal the Olympic Village’s lively second life.

These compact bungalows housed female athletes during the 1972 Games and now belong to Munich’s student community. Wander their narrow lanes to see façades transformed with murals, patterns, jokes, and personal symbols. The intimate, improvised atmosphere offers a playful contrast to the neighboring high-rise blocks and monumental sports venues.
