From Civic Stone to Futurism123456789101112
Hochelaga-Maisonneuve was shaped by two bursts of extraordinary ambition. In the early 20th century, industrial Maisonneuve built baths, markets, schools, parks and municipal landmarks worthy of a prosperous independent city. Their stone façades made public services look ceremonial, even as heavy spending helped push Maisonneuve toward annexation by Montreal in 1918. The walk begins among neighborhood institutions that residents still use for shopping, reading, worship and recreation. From the former city hall and Château Dufresne, the route shifts toward Olympic Park, where traditional streets give way to ramps, elevated plazas, sculptural concrete and engineering on a colossal scale. This is an ideal tour for architecture lovers, urban-history fans and anyone curious about what happens after grand civic visions meet reality. The most rewarding discovery is that these buildings are not merely relics: a city hall became a library, a velodrome became the Biodôme, and monumental spaces continue to support everyday neighborhood life.

Caserne Létourneux

A soaring fire station turns essential infrastructure into a proud civic monument.

Maisonneuve’s leaders wanted even practical services to project confidence. This former fire station does exactly that through robust masonry, ornamental stone and a commanding hose-drying tower. Viewed from the surrounding residential streets, its ceremonial scale introduces the district’s early belief that architecture could advertise municipal progress.
