Madrid’s Civil War Frontlines1234567891011
Madrid’s Civil War front is still visible, but rarely in obvious ways. This walk teaches you to read low concrete bunkers, river approaches, repaired brickwork and reconstructed buildings as evidence of a siege that lasted from 1936 until 1939. The route crosses Ciudad Universitaria and Moncloa, where lecture halls, laboratories and an unfinished hospital became fortified positions. You will follow the advance from the Manzanares, examine the surviving Parque del Oeste bunkers and stand outside buildings once shattered by bombardment and close combat. The journey also explores what happened after the shooting stopped. Francoist monuments recast devastation as victory, while reconstruction concealed trenches, ruins and difficult memories. Stories of medical workers, prisoners, students and civilians keep the experience from becoming only a sequence of military movements. This is an absorbing half-day adventure for history enthusiasts, urban explorers and anyone curious about how cities remember conflict. It rewards patient observation: the most revealing evidence may be a changed brick color, an erased site or an ordinary landscape whose peaceful appearance hides a former front.

Filosofía y Letras

A modernist faculty transformed into a barricaded strongpoint during Madrid’s long siege.

This modernist faculty became one of Ciudad Universitaria’s emblematic battle sites. Classrooms, corridors and library spaces were barricaded as shelling shattered windows and masonry. Today, patched brickwork and long window bands hint at that transformation, while the busy academic setting underscores how thoroughly ordinary education was pulled into war.
