Hampstead tells several London stories at once. An iron-rich spring created a fashionable health resort, its winding lanes supported a lively village economy, and its reputation for restorative air attracted generations of artists, writers and independent thinkers. This walk moves from the intimate world of Flask Walk, Burgh House and Chalybeate Well onto the southern Heath. Along the way, ponds and an unfinished viaduct reveal that this seemingly natural landscape was engineered, contested and ultimately protected through determined public action. Parliament Hill rewards the climb with one of London’s great free panoramas. The final section follows changing ideas about healthy modern life. Parliament Hill Lido brings public exercise and civic design into the story, while 2 Willow Road, Hopkins House and the Isokon Building chart experiments in concrete, glass, steel, furniture and communal living. The tour is ideal for walkers who enjoy architecture, social history and landscapes with hidden layers. Expect hills, possible mud and memorable contrasts between Georgian brick, open grassland and buildings that once seemed startlingly futuristic.

Whitestone Pond

A windswept hilltop pond reveals Hampstead’s many-layered relationship with water.

At Hampstead’s exposed summit, Whitestone Pond reflects broad skies beside a busy historic crossroads. This was a practical watering place rather than a medicinal spring, reminding you that local water served animals, transport, recreation and health in different ways. Pause for the atmosphere before descending into the Heath.
