Craigmillar: From Castle to Community12345678910
Craigmillar Castle may look like the obvious star, but this tour treats it as the beginning rather than the whole story. From its towers, you can read a landscape shaped by estate power, agriculture, mineral rights and Edinburgh’s outward expansion. The route moves from historic stone into lived-in neighbourhoods, where adapted veterans’ housing, municipal terraces, civic services and retained landmarks reveal changing ideas about community. Regeneration appears here as a contested process: new investment brought opportunities, but demolition also disrupted networks and erased familiar places. Craigmillar Now introduces the residents who made culture a tool for action. The Craigmillar Festival Society’s mothers, children, artists and campaigners challenged outsiders’ assumptions and showed that local people could create art, shape policy and demand better services on their own terms. This walk suits curious visitors who enjoy social history, architecture, urban planning and places beyond Edinburgh’s postcard centre. It rewards respectful observation, historic maps and time spent listening to the everyday life of a community that has repeatedly reinvented itself.

Craigmillar Castle

Read Edinburgh’s changing landscape from a remarkably intact medieval stronghold.

Begin with the castle as a seat of land and power, not simply royal drama. Its courtyards, chambers and high viewpoints reveal how an aristocratic estate became a landscape of mining, municipal housing, hospitals and regeneration. From the upper levels, the rest of Craigmillar’s story spreads out below you.
