World’s Fair Rewired for Tomorrow123456789101112
Most world’s fairs are remembered through postcards, demolished pavilions and a few stranded landmarks. Expo City offers a more interesting story: selected buildings, parks, utilities and mobility systems were retained, edited and asked to perform as pieces of a permanent district. Starting at the metro, you will trace the transition from event-scale infrastructure to pedestrian streets, shaded avenues and Al Wasl Plaza’s immense civic room. Along the way, Surreal, the UAE Pavilion, Alif and the Expo museum reveal different forms of reuse, from continued operation to selective programming and complete curatorial reinvention. The final stretch turns toward landscape and environmental performance. Al Forsan Park preserves years of living growth, while Terra makes solar generation, shade and water-conscious design physically legible. This is not a victory lap for every sustainability claim; it is an invitation to test what works at walking speed. Architecture enthusiasts, urbanists, Expo veterans and climate-conscious travelers will find plenty to debate. Come in daylight, when shadows, planting and building envelopes reveal more than decorative illumination ever could.

Expo 2020 Metro Station

A mega-event metro terminus now anchors Expo City’s everyday low-carbon arrival.

Begin with the system that made a car-light world’s fair possible. Route 2020 still connects this once-temporary destination to Dubai’s wider metro network. Its broad platforms, generous concourse and oversized crowd channels reveal how infrastructure built for millions was retained and recalibrated for workers, residents and everyday visitors.
