Secrets of Cinnamon Gardens12345678
Cinnamon Gardens began as plantation country, but declining cultivation opened the way for an unusually spacious district of villas, institutions, sports grounds and ceremonial avenues. This walk reveals how greenery became an instrument of prestige, planning and power. Begin among the restored arcades and lawns of Independence Square, then trace elite recreation at the Racecourse. The Colombo National Museum introduces royal treasures and colonial collecting, while the lotus-inspired Nelum Pokuna Theatre shows how later governments continued shaping this cultural quarter. Quiet Barnes Place offers a more intimate experience at the Sapumal Foundation, where Sri Lankan modernist art remains embedded in an artist’s former home. The route then returns to public space in Viharamahadevi Park before concluding beneath the dome and colonnades of Colombo Town Hall. Architecture enthusiasts, art lovers and curious urban walkers will find plenty to enjoy. Come for the landmarks, but stay for the contrasts between plantation history, colonial institutions, national identity and the everyday life unfolding beneath Colombo’s tropical canopy.

Arcade Independence Square

Colonial asylum pavilions reborn as elegant arcades within landscaped Cinnamon Gardens.

Once part of a colonial psychiatric asylum, these red-roofed pavilions now contain cafés, shops and tranquil courtyards. Walk beneath the deep verandas and admire the symmetry, white columns and generous lawns. The polished restoration introduces both Cinnamon Gardens’ institutional architecture and the complicated choices involved in reusing colonial buildings.
