Drumbeats and Freedom in Getsemaní123456789101112
This walk tells Cartagena’s independence story from the street upward. Rather than focusing only on governors and grand façades, it follows sailors, artisans, Black militia members, neighborhood organizers, and working families whose actions changed the city’s political future. The journey moves from the old port and official memorials into Getsemaní’s mural-covered streets and community plazas. Along the way, you will encounter maritime history, evolving public art, stories of Pedro Romero and the Lanceros de Getsemaní, and spaces where music, worship, play, and conversation still overlap. It is an ideal route for travelers who enjoy history with complexity, art in its living context, and neighborhoods that cannot be reduced to nightlife. Murals may change and drumming is never guaranteed, but that unpredictability is part of encountering a real community rather than a staged attraction. Most importantly, the tour treats freedom as an unfinished process. Independence ended Spanish rule, but it did not immediately abolish slavery or erase racial and class exclusion. Getsemaní’s walls, plazas, and portraits invite you to celebrate popular agency while asking whose freedom was recognized, delayed, or forgotten.
