Horta’s Art Nouveau Trail12345678910
Brussels Art Nouveau is best discovered away from the grand civic center, where extraordinary façades still line everyday residential streets. This walk follows the movement through Saint-Gilles and neighboring Ixelles, revealing how architects transformed narrow townhouses with light, color, iron, glass, and inventive craftsmanship. You will move between Horta’s revolutionary spatial designs and Paul Hankar’s flatter, more graphic language. Along the way, look for painted sgraffito, owl motifs, monumental studio windows, sculpted stone, and balcony rails curling like stems. Maison Hannon and the Horta Museum offer optional opportunities to step inside these complete artistic worlds. The route also introduces figures beyond the familiar masters, including painter Louise de Hem, architect Édouard Pelseneer, and the artists who collaborated on murals, glass, and decorative panels. Their work shows that Brussels Art Nouveau was not one uniform style but a creative network shaped by clients, craftspeople, critics, and designers. Architecture lovers will find plenty to analyze, while curious walkers can simply enjoy the visual treasure hunt. Take your time, look above the shopfronts and parked cars, and remember that many masterpieces remain private homes. The reward is a richer, more intimate understanding of the city that launched architectural Art Nouveau.

Hôtel Tassel

Horta’s revolutionary townhouse turned iron, glass, light, and movement into modern architecture.

Designed for professor Émile Tassel, this landmark is widely considered the first fully developed Art Nouveau house. Horta broke apart the conventional Brussels floor plan, organizing the interior around light, stairs, iron, and flowing levels. From outside, study the bowed façade and exposed metalwork hinting at the spatial revolution within.
