Factory Bells of Sant Andreu1234567891011
Sant Andreu still feels like a town folded inside Barcelona. This walk follows the changing rhythms that shaped it: parish bells and market mornings, then factory gates, clocks, sirens, and shift changes. You will move from Casa Bloc’s radical vision of workers’ housing into the old civic center and along Carrer Gran, where shops and side streets preserve the scale of an independent settlement. The market, narrow residential plots, and neighborhood associations reveal how industrial families ate, learned, performed, organized, and spent precious hours away from work. Fabra i Coats provides the dramatic centerpiece. Its brick halls once coordinated textile production and a workforce that included many women; today they contain a library, artists, exhibitions, and community activity. Nearby Can Fontanet places a surviving farmhouse against the factory walls, capturing the neighborhood’s entire transformation in one view. This tour is ideal for curious walkers, social-history enthusiasts, and anyone who prefers living neighborhoods to polished tourist districts. The optional Pegaso extension carries the story into heavy industry, organized labor, and the reuse of factory land as public space.

Casa Bloc

Radical workers’ housing designed around dignity, daylight, ventilation, and shared space.

Casa Bloc turns workers’ housing into a bold social statement. Its five connected brick blocks were planned for working families during the Second Republic, with duplex homes, sunlight, ventilation, and communal circulation. Walk beneath the raised sections and follow the long galleries, where private domestic life meets an ambitious vision of collective living.
