Empire to Revolution in Addis1234567891011
This walk begins where imperial privilege produced its own most determined critics. Addis Ababa University occupies former palace grounds, creating an extraordinary setting in which royal rooms, academic life, and memories of radical student organizing overlap. From Sidist Kilo, the route follows monuments that shaped Haile Selassie’s legitimacy: resistance to Fascist occupation, liberation, constitutional modernity, and a carefully presented national past. Along the way, you will encounter the questions that animated students—land ownership, political exclusion, class, cultural identity, and the meaning of Ethiopia itself. The final stretch moves from imperial symbols to the Derg’s muscular revolutionary imagery. Tiglachin, Churchill Avenue, the Lion of Judah, and Meskel Square show successive regimes competing for the city’s public spaces. The Red Terror Museum then replaces heroic abstraction with the faces and possessions of those killed by revolutionary violence. History lovers, political travelers, students, and anyone fascinated by contested monuments will find this journey rewarding. It is a powerful way to understand Addis Ababa as a living archive where empire, resistance, revolution, and remembrance remain visible within a single walk.
